Super Seniors was the JrFLL Challenge for Fall, 2012.
The focus was on how technology changed from when the children's grandparents were young until the current time. The Wake Robotics teams worked on a 10(ish) week schedule where we chose one topic each week to focus on (communication, transportation, toys and games, etc.).
For each topic/week:
Before each weekly meeting, team members talked with their senior partners about how that area had changed since the seniors were young
We shared what we found out at our team meeting
In groups, the students put together a timeline of inventions that occurred from 1900 through to the present (we gave them cut out inventions and they sorted the inventions into dates -- a great math task!
There were then activities exploring the weekly topic -- playing games from the 1940's like hopscotch and hula hoops, learning how a rotary dialed telephone worked, mailing snail mail to each other and tracking the time
Each meeting then ended with a LEGO build challenge -- using gears and motors to explore the topic
Our season culminated in an Expo (noncompetitive) in December where the students showed display boards of their research,
